France has a tradition of supporting artists from all over the world. This film was distributed commercially in France a few months back and received plaudits from the French public and press. “Last year, at the Cannes Film Festival, his film “Gangs of Wasseypur” (complete version) received a standing ovation when it was premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight. To honour the Indian film industry, the French Minister of Culture, Ms Aurélie Filippetti conferred the award of “Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres” (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) on filmmaker and producer Anurag Kashyap at a ceremony during the Cannes Film Festival on 20th May 2013. To mark the occasion, Amitabh Bachchan walked the red carpet for the opening film “The Great Gatsby” and Vidya Balan is a jury member. The guest country selection coincides with the centennial of Indian cinema, during which Cannes is screening a large number of films and welcoming delegates from India to celebrate the centenary. India is the guest country at the ongoing 66th Cannes Film Festival (15th to 26th May, 2013).
